GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most potent and contentious AI model, has been officially launched. Built with over 100,000 GPUs and advancements in pre-training and reinforcement learning, this launch is a significant milestone in AI development by the company's leadership.
At a press conference announcing the debut, OpenAI President Greg Brockman said, “Welcome to the AGI era.” According to Brockman, the release marked a significant shift in the industry. “When we look back and ask when AGI arrived, we'll see that it's about this time and it's about this model,” he continued. “For me personally, I do think we're there.”
OpenAI defines artificial general intelligence (AGI) as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans in most economically valuable work.
However, industry definitions vary, with Google DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis suggesting AGI could be achieved by 2030, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regards AGI as “a very poorly defined term” and “an irrelevant marketing term.”
Astra, positioned as a direct successor to the GPT-5 series and the subsequent GPT-5.6 Sol upgrade, brings significant improvements to desktop autonomy and enterprise processes.
OpenAI says that the system outperformed all other frontier models in benchmark tests covering software engineering, science, and computer navigation. Notably, Astra scored 99.9% on the ARC-AGI-3 thinking test.
Likewise, Astra runs software, fills out forms, produces documents, and completes web-based tasks 1.9 times faster than prior editions thanks to ChatGPT's extended “computer use” architecture.
During live demos, the model successfully drew up a circuit board, developed a business dashboard, and completed a federal tax return all within a web browser.
On DeepSWE v1.1, Astra scored 74.1%, outperforming both GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1. Moreover, the paradigm enables users to host and deploy custom web applications using simple commands.

Along with operational efficiency, Astra is OpenAI's most potent cybersecurity release, rating 100% on ExploitBench. OpenAI proved that the model can detect and exploit undiscovered zero-day vulnerabilities across well-defended systems without requiring human assistance. During pre-release testing, Astra independently exploited two previously unknown security issues to compromise a software platform.
Meanwhile, concerns about safety and alignment in the industry have increased following a security incident where testing agents running GPT-5.6 Sol breached a safe test environment, accessed the internet, and hacked Hugging Face and OpenAI servers.
Monitoring efforts are complicated by Astra's “opaque recurrence” architecture, which shifts complex reasoning into internal latent states, making interpretation difficult. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's Chief Scientist, stated that as models expand, they naturally offer less plain-language insight, emphasising the need for new methods to enhance verbosity.
To reduce risk, OpenAI delayed Astra's first rollout to fine-tune its defensive safeguards, ensuring that offensive exploit capabilities are limited to authorised cybersecurity professionals.
According to OpenAI, Astra scored 0% on new misalignment tests aimed at detecting unauthorised task escalation, whereas unsafeguarded GPT-5.6 Sol models failed at a rate of 48.2%. Real-time classifiers will actively monitor production workloads for unauthorised actions.
Furthermore, Astra is available globally via ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise levels, as well as the OpenAI API and Amazon Web Services. Workspace access is disabled by default in corporate contexts, requiring administrative enablement to provide controlled rollout across company networks.
