Working at sea means operating in an environment where emergencies can develop quickly and every crew member has a role to play. Fire, medical incidents, abandonment, security threats, fatigue, and onboard hazards all require clear procedures, calm decision-making, and a shared understanding of safety responsibilities.
The STCW Basic Safety Training for Seafarers course provides a structured introduction to the core safety knowledge expected of personnel working onboard ships. Across five days, participants explore personal survival, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibility, and maritime security awareness.
The programme combines essential theory with practical awareness of shipboard procedures, helping participants understand how to respond appropriately to common onboard emergencies and contribute to a safer, more disciplined maritime working environment.
You'll learn how to:
- Understand the purpose of the STCW framework and basic seafarer safety responsibilities.
- Recognise emergency signals, muster procedures, and common onboard emergencies.
- Use personal survival equipment appropriately.
- Understand abandon-ship procedures and survival principles.
- Identify fire hazards and select suitable firefighting equipment.
- Apply basic first-aid priorities during onboard medical incidents.
- Follow safe working practices and accident-prevention procedures.
- Understand pollution prevention and environmental responsibilities.
- Work effectively within multicultural shipboard teams.
- Recognise fatigue, stress, and communication risks.
- Identify basic maritime security threats and report concerns appropriately.
- Prepare for written and practical assessment requirements where applicable.
