Top officials from the US and China are exploring the establishment of a “notification mechanism” aimed at addressing AI-related incidents that may pose risks to national security.
On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recounted this discussion. He described his discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York as “successful.”
Remarkably, this meeting takes place prior to a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for later this week in Washington.
Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and China's chief trade negotiator Li Chenggang met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of a planned summit between US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later that week.
Moreover, Bessent emphasised the significance of increasing transparency between the leading AI powers globally, stating that such transparency is crucial for cross-border activities.
Additionally, he said that the meeting discussed plans to implement a process through the Board of Trade to identify possible tariff reductions on goods.
The discussions occurred against the backdrop of a delicate US-China trade truce, which is set to expire on November 10.

The agreement in Busan, South Korea, in October last year, established US tariffs on Chinese goods at about 20 per cent after a trade conflict that had previously raised tariffs to triple digits.
Meanwhile, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that representatives from both sides engaged in “candid, in-depth and constructive exchanges on key economic and trade issues,” which included discussions on artificial intelligence.
Bessent commented on X that these talks are crucial for President Trump to advance America's economic interests and achieve tangible outcomes for the American populace.
The US and China are currently engaged in a competitive struggle to assert their leadership in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology, highlighting the geopolitical significance of technological advancement.
In recent discussions, there has been pressure on Washington to slow the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) due to concerns about its potential negative consequences on society.
However, Trump has largely downplayed these worries, asserting that existing regulations are adequate and stressing the necessity for the US to maintain its competitive advantage over China in the AI sector. He remarked earlier this month, “whoever wins in AI, wins.”
In May, during a meeting hosted by Xi in Beijing with Trump, the leaders discussed potential collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI). These discussions culminated in an agreement whereby China would purchase Boeing jets and US agricultural products in return for reduced tariffs.
