Elon Musk announced on Sunday that SpaceX is now concentrating on establishing a 'self-growing city' on the moon, which has the potential to be completed in less than ten years.
On his X social media site, Musk stated that SpaceX still plans to begin construction on his long-held goal of a city on Mars in five to seven years, “but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilisation and the Moon is faster.”
Musk's remarks are in line with a Wall Street Journal article published on Friday, which stated that SpaceX had informed investors that it will put the moon first and try to reach Mars afterward, with an uncrewed lunar landing scheduled for March 2027.
Moreover, this marks a shift from Musk's previous focus on Mars as SpaceX's primary destination, as he had aimed for an uncrewed Mars mission by the end of 2026. He previously stated that the Moon was a distraction in comparing the two explorations.
Musk is known for establishing ambitious timelines for projects like electric vehicles and self-driving technology, which often do not meet their scheduled deadlines.

China is fiercely competing with the United States to send people back to the moon this decade. The Apollo 17 mission in 1972 was the last time humans had set foot on the moon.
Musk revealed a week ago that SpaceX had purchased xAI, the artificial intelligence business he also heads, for $250 billion. The rocket and satellite company is valued at $1 trillion, while the artificial intelligence company is valued at $250 billion.
As the demand for compute power rises with AI research, supporters of the move see it as a means for SpaceX to support its plans for space-based data centers, which Musk believes are more energy efficient than terrestrial facilities.
Later this year, SpaceX hopes to raise up to $50 billion through a public offering, making it the biggest in history.
On Monday, Musk stated that NASA will account for less than 5% of SpaceX's revenue for the year, with most earnings deriving from the commercial Starlink system.
SpaceX holds a $4 billion contract with NASA as a core contractor for the Artemis moon program, specifically for landing astronauts on the lunar surface with the Starship vehicle.
Further, Musk released the Starlink Wi-Fi service's first Super Bowl advertisement on Sunday.
Musk is driving his publicly traded company, Tesla (TSLA.O), in a different path while simultaneously reorienting SpaceX.
After essentially creating the world market for electric cars, Tesla now intends to invest $20 billion this year in an attempt to shift its focus to robots and autonomous driving.
Briefly, in an attempt to expedite the transition, Musk announced last month that Tesla would stop producing two car models at its California factory to create space for the creation of its Optimus humanoid robots.
