Marine accidents can have significant consequences for vessel safety, human life, the environment, and maritime operations. Conducting effective accident investigations is essential for identifying contributing factors, understanding underlying causes, and preventing similar incidents. A structured investigation approach also supports regulatory compliance and continuous improvement in maritime safety management.
The Marine Accident Investigation course provides participants with a practical understanding of marine casualty investigation principles, regulatory frameworks, and investigative procedures. The programme examines relevant International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements, including the application of SOLAS, MARPOL, and STCW, alongside evidence collection, interviewing techniques, accident analysis, and the identification of unsafe conditions.
Through maritime case studies, group exercises, and simulated investigations, participants learn how to document findings, communicate investigation outcomes, develop preventive recommendations, and integrate lessons learned into Safety Management Systems (SMS). The course concludes with practical simulations based on Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) case studies, helping participants apply investigative techniques to realistic maritime incidents.
